My first blog

Wow, didn’t know if I could do it.

It’s been awhile since I really sat down and started writing. Oh, I’ve thought about writing. But when you have been writing professionally as long as I have, there’s a little thing called “ego” that keeps you from blogging much like the general masses.

Where do I begin? Well, as some of you might know, and even for those of you who don’t, there’s this little thing called a newspaper in Wellington. And when I say “little” ā€” this newspaper got a whole lot more little. The Wellington Daily News became the Wellington Weekly News, and switched from a full-sized broadsheet product to a diminutive tabloid. And with it came my escort out the door.

I was one of three reporters at the newspaper. Now there are two. I’m on the outside looking in, wondering exactly what I’m going to do with myself.

Oh, there are options. Trouble is figuring out which path to take is a little daunting.

I’m 46 ā€” not quite at the zenith of my life. And from a career standpoint, it’s a little daunting. I’m at a crossroads. Do I try to find one last parcel of nugget out there in the newspaper world when it is clearly a dying industry? Or do I pursue something electronically where the avenue of revenue has yet or may never be defined?

Do I slow down and make the best of the world around me? Or do I try to do something that may make a difference?

Lots of questions. Damn, life doesn’t get much easier does it?
